Durga puja
Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava or Sharodotsava, is an annual Hindu festival originating in the Indian subcontinent which reveres and pays homage to the Hindu goddess Durga and is also celebrated because of Durga's victory over Mahishasur. It celebrates the victory of good over evil as goddess Durga killed demon king Mahishasur. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the goddess visits her earthly abode during this time to bless her devotees.
Durga Puja holds great significance for the Bengali community. Ultimately, it can be said that the devotees worship Durga to gain positive energy, to cleanse their minds so as to attain purity and salvation. That's why Hindus celebrate the nine-day festival Navratri, taking time out from their busy schedules to revere the nine incarnations of goddess Durga. In almost all of her portraits, Maa Durga is seen riding a lion. Lion is the 'vahana' or vehicle of Maa Durga.
The animal also represents the power of Maa Durga. Durga traditionally holds the weapons of various male gods of Hindu mythology, which they give her to fight the evil forces because they feel that she is the shakti (energy, power). These include chakra, conch, bow, arrow, sword, javelin, Trishul, shield, and a noose. According to legend, Durga was created for the slaying of the buffalo demon Mahishasura by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and the lesser gods, who were otherwise powerless to overcome him.
Embodying their collective energy, she is both derivative from the male divinities and the true source of their inner power. Durga Puja in India officially begins with Mahalaya. According to legend, on this day, Goddess Durga begins her journey towards Earth. ... In destroying evil, Durga transforms into Goddess Kali, who is regarded as her most ferocious avatar.
