A Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama becomes the first European to reach India via the Atlantic Ocean when he arrives at Calicut on the Malabar Coast. Da Gama sailed from Lisbon, Portugal, in July 1497, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and anchored at Malindi on the east coast of Africa. The name "India" is originally derived from the name of the river Sindhu (Indus River) and has been in use in Greek. India is tagged as the mother of so many inventions like algebra, number zero, shampoo, chess, the value of pi, and diamond mining. India has nearly 90,000 types of animals including over 350 mammals, 1,200 bird species, and 50,000 plant species. All these features made India a Unique Country in the World.
